The drawings described in this list have been produced to meet the needs of those wishing to build authentic scale models, and every care has been taken to ensure accurate detail. In the case of named ships they have been compiled from the original builders' plans and specifications, personal survey of the actual vessel, or both.
The Smithsonian's collection of watercraft plans, maintained by the History of Technology Division of the National Museum of American History, is a valuable resource for the maritime historian, the student of naval architecture, other scholars, the model builder, and craftspeople.
Due to the sheer number of available plans and the variance in their complexity and conditions, copies of ship plans from the Museum library can only be purchased through the library. Copies can be made of any plans in the collection that are not too fragile to be handled.
